It seems that living in Malaysia has poisoned his mind a bit as he seems to be retracting his earlier proper statements and moving towards absolute free speech.

You see anything when it gets to an absolute level is quite dangerous including freedoms, like the freedom of speech. Good government is there to censor like in the Austrian case or in cases where the Government could step in against the publishers of cartoons.

You see I am a believer in the constitution and in something that Ovid might agree with (since he painted it on a shirt once upon a time): Your rights end where mine begin. You see when one's exercise of their freedom of speech becomes dangerous to society and the greater good, it is the government's responsibility to step in--as it does on occasion.

Now moving on to the heart of the matter, which I believe is censorship. Let me agree with Bill Paley when he tells Edward R. Murrow in Goodnight and Goodluck, "Everyone censors." You see, governments do it to control the population, and yes it may be true that too much information is withheld. But now, with the internet, and blogs like this any information can be posted and freely distributed--it is up to you as an individual to participate.

It is up to the Network executives to work with corporations to survive financially. All the same time they cooperate with the government to make sure they aren't doing anything that causes great unrest. So as long as there is no great unrest and the society/government function, then all is well. Media does its job. But the problem is we don't have many Edward Murrows and Fred Friendlys around to do the news like they used to. That's what we need in the mainstream since we already have Indy Media.

I'll leave you with the quote from that movie, which I think tackles your issues in this post quite well:

Let me ask you this:

...why didn't you correct McCarthy...

...when he said that Alger Hiss
was convicted of treason?

He was only convicted of perjury.
You corrected everything else.

Did you not want the appearance
of defending a known Communist?

I would argue that everyone censors,
including you.

-Z-Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10911061971570552368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8523449.post-33144352081867337162009-03-25T20:26:00.000-04:002009-03-25T20:26:00.000-04:00Dear “Whatever the Fuck Your name is,” In keepin...Dear “Whatever the Fuck Your name is,”
In keeping with the idea of Freedom of Speech, allow me to waste the next 30 seconds of my life to intercede on your stupidity. The first and last sentence of Mr. Hafeez’s - yes, I know him, and very well too - introductory paragraph addressed ABSOLUTE freedom of speech. Did you even read beyond the first few words?????????
Moreover, the “Art of Hypocrisy” was a pun - an inside joke that you would not have been privy to.
This is why the world is Fucked – up. It’s not because of a paucity of FREEDOM OF SPEECH..but a surplus of JUDGEMENTAL Assholes.
If you would like to see a sample of my writing, do ask Mr. Hafeez. I think he'll know just what to give you.

Sincerely,
Ovid.Ovidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10656433029871866247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8523449.post-49582220455189685882009-03-25T02:26:00.000-04:002009-03-25T02:26:00.000-04:00Allah bless your soul Nausherwan.Malaysia can prom...Allah bless your soul Nausherwan.

Malaysia can promote tourism, add value to its economic manufacturing, triple its GDP within a decade or even build five Twin Towers... but so long as pivotal issues such as freedom of speech and liberty aren't addressed, Malaysians can wrap their "Wawasan 2020" and flush it down the toilet.

Ovid, don't argue Naush's post for the sake or arguing. He never said anyting about absolute freedom of speech. Maybe you should re-read his post (a few more times maybe), sit down, think, draft your idea... and THEN TYPE IT. This is not only freedom of speech, but intellect in speech.

Sheesh....salemlekuzenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05336027643159417211noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8523449.post-52873238515148996182009-03-24T22:46:00.000-04:002009-03-24T22:46:00.000-04:00My thoughts on Freedom of Speech: Absolute freedom...My thoughts on Freedom of Speech: Absolute freedom of anything brings chaos.
What happens then, if we restrain freedom, to bring order?
This Mr. Hafeez is "The art of Hipocracy."

OvidOvidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10656433029871866247noreply@blogger.com
